I was born and raised in the UAE, staying there for a good part of my schooling. Growing up, I was always a curious person wondering how things worked. So naturally, I found myself gravitating towards the sciences. This drive to learn more about how things work led me to medicine, landing in India for Med school, and my leanings are towards the heart, aorta, and everything vascular. I was fortunate to gain incredible mentors early in medical school who inspired me to become a surgeon.
My brother was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot and was repaired by a cardiovascular surgeon with open-heart surgery. His repair would not have been possible without the rigorous checking and research. As a surgeon, you see patient problems firsthand and apply the available science to help address issues directly in the operating room. As a scientist, you can take these problems to the lab and use science to work towards a solution. I resonated with the position of a surgeon-scientist. It provided an avenue for me to ask 'why?' about problems I find fascinating and to use this curiosity to advocate for patients and find solutions for them. There is also an immense privilege in taking your knowledge and ability and using it to help others as they put their trust in you. When I realized this, I decided to become a vascular surgeon. I hope to take my work internationally to benefit underprivileged populations in the future.
I do not have any relevant financial / non-financial relationships with any proprietary interests.
