Eric Smith is a 4th year medical at UCSF. Eric started with a strong desire to address healthcare disparities. In pursuit of this passion, he matriculated to medical school through the PRIME program at UCSF. This sub-curricular tract is comprised of additional coursework, outreach activities, and a research-year to equip himself with the tools to be a leader in caring for the urban underserved. As a medical student Eric became enthralled by surgery and the role it can play in disease management for marginalized populations. During his time on the vascular surgery service he saw an opportunity to merge his two interests. Given the clear disparities seen in Peripheral Arterial Disease his interest in vascular surgery grew and he began exploring the impact of social determinants of health on vascular surgery outcomes. Eric is currently pursuing a masters of Clinical Research and Epidemiology at UCSF. He is thrilled to be able to attend the Vascular Annual Meeting and embed himself within a community of vascular surgeons and health services researchers who will be instrumental in advancing his career goals of becoming an academic surgeon poised at the intersection of disparities and vascular surgery.
